My World Tuesday

Over the weekend My World was Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, N.Y. I took only a few photographs in the very large cemetery because there was a lot of snow on the ground. I am eager to return in the Spring, just a month or so away, to capture some of the very unusual statuary.

Woodlawn Cemetery is one of the largest cemeteries in New York City. A rural cemetery located in the Bronx, it opened in 1865, in what was then southern Westchester County, in an area that was annexed to New York City in 1874. The cemetery covers more than 400 acres and is the resting place for more than 300,000 people.

Built on rolling hills, its tree-lined roads lead to some unique memorials, some designed by McKim Mead & White, John Russell Pope, James Gamble Rogers, Cass Gilbert, Carrère and Hastings, Sir Edwin Lutyens, Beatrix Jones Farrand, and John LaFarge.

Fiorello LaGuardia, Irving Berlin, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, R.H. Macy, J. C. Penney, Robert Moses, Thomas Nast (photographer) are some of the celebrities buried here.

THE WOODLAWN CEMETERY is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world.

What a beautiful and peaceful looking place, Mary! And what a huge cemetery! It would be interesting to visit! It's lovely in the snow, but I'm sure it would be much nicer with some warm sun! Have a great week!

Cemetaries are wonderful places for walking and photographing, in all seasons. The statuary looks in very good condition.

It is a beautiful cemetery with very nice sculpture. Looks quite different from the cemeteries I know. Although our cemeteries are worth a post or 2 as well. :-)
