My World Tuesday

Photobucket

This is the Queensboro Bridge, also known as the 59th Street Bridge. It bridges the East River between Long Island City, Queens, and Manhattan, passing over Roosevelt Island. It is a cantilever bridge that was completed in 1909.

In F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway traverse the bridge on their way from Long Island to Manhattan. "The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge," Nick says, "is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and the beauty in the world".

I live about 5 miles from the bridge and often use it to go into Manhattan by car or Express bus. A very famous song was sung about this bridge by Simon & Garfunkel:

The 59th Street Bridge song

Slow down, you move too fast.
You got to make the morning last.
Just kicking down the cobble stones.
Looking for fun and feelin' groovy.

Ba da, Ba da, Ba da, Ba da...Feelin' Groovy.

Hello lamp-post,
What cha knowin'?
I've come to watch your flowers growin'.
Ain't cha got no rhymes for me?
Doot-in' doo-doo,
Feelin' groovy.

I've got no deeds to do,
No promises to keep.
I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep.
Let the morning time drop all its petals on me.
Life, I love you,
All is groovy.

Mary: Thanks for the memories with the photo and the song of the bridge. I'm sure NYC will have a lot to contribute to My World.

Fabulous shot... she certainly doesn't get the attention she deserves in the big scheme of things.

I'll be humming that song often today!

What a very different part of the world you live in than where I am. Big city for you, and country for me. Your picture is great, and it's so interesting to see how and where other people live!
best wishes, RR @ ruralramblings.com

Love your love of your NY. Beautiful old bridge, I remember it well from The Great Gatsby and I've always had a soft spot for the song too.
Looking forward to your next post.
