Postcard Friendship Friday

Marie is the host of Postcard Friendship Friday.

A vintage postcard circa 1910. Young boy, all decked out in his St. Pattys' outfit, stands on a chair and sings. Artist Ellen Clapsaddle.

What is that down by his feet? Ya ask...

A shillelagh.

And what's a shillelagh? And how is it pronounced?

A shillelagh (Irish: sail éille, a cudgel with a strap), commonly pronounced "shi-LAY-lee" or "shi-LAY-la," is a wooden walking stick and club or cudgel, typically made from a stout knotty (blackthorn) stick with a large knob at the top, that is associated with Ireland and Irish folklore.

Here's the song "St. Patrick Was a Gentleman" sung and played on the guitar. Enjoy!

That was entertaining and educational, Mary! Thanks.

I'm part Irish on my mom's side. Her dad's family came over from Ireland.

Cute song and informative post!

Ralph is about three-quarters Irish, despite his French-sounding last name...His mom was Irish and his dad was half-Irish.

I'm about a quarter Irish. ;-)

I did enjoy this very much. Born in Dublin, so of course I would!
