My World Tuesday

I know this town
and it knows me.
I know these streets
and they recognize my steps.
The air here caresses me
and I feel its familiarity.
I know this town
and it knows me.

Sooc Sunday

Hi Jan, here's a photo of a small park near my house. I think the blooming tree might be a dogwood. Behind it you can see a little of the
Whitestone Bridge that spans the East River.

Have a good Sunday!

Postcard Friendship Friday

Artist Bessie Pease Gutmann (USA) "Rare" Easter Postcard

Bessie Pease Gutmann (1876-1960) was an American artist and illustrator most noted for her paintings of cherubs, infants and young children. During the early 1900s Gutmann was considered one of the better-known magazine and book illustrators in the United States. Her artwork was featured on 22 magazine covers such as Woman's Home Companion and McCall's between 1906 and 1920. She also illustrated popular children's books including a notable 1907 edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Although the commercial popularity of Guttman's art declined during World War II, there was renewed interest in her illustrations from collectors by the late 20th century.

Beth at The Best Hearts Are Crunchy is now hosting Postcard Friendship Friday. Thanks Marie for hosting previously.

My World Tuesday

This water tower on Northern Blvd in Great Neck, NY is getting a sprucing up for Spring.

I wondered for a while why it was all covered up. Finally I realized that it probably is being scraped to remove rust and it's covered up to keep the rust from flying everywhere.

Interesting fact:

For pilots of small, private aircraft, water towers are a huge help because:
  • They are large.
  • They are elevated, making them easy to see from an airplane.
  • All small towns have them.
  • Small towns are nice enough to paint the town's name on nearly every tower!
If you have ever been in a small airplane flying cross-country, you know that from the air, all small towns look the same; it is very easy to get confused. When you don't have a GPS receiver, water towers make navigation a LOT easier!

Postcard Friendship Friday

I would love to own a postcard of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. I printed out a 4x6 card from the 'net and it's pretty good but not the best.

eBay has one for sale in the UK. If you google "Tim Burton's Mad Hatter" you will find many photos of Depp as the Mad Hatter. I'm going to pick the highest resolution photo and print it out in 4x6.

Go over to Beth at The Best Hearts Are Crunchy to view other participants.

My World Tuesday

This young man climbing the rope is found in Zum Stammtisch German Restaurant in Glendale, NY
Glendale is home to a number of German cuisine restaurants. It used to be home to a large number of German immigrants. Today it is mostly South American and Asian immigrants that live there. The Shops at Atlas Park are located there.

I don't know anything about the sculpture in the photo. Anyone out there recognize it?

SOOC Sunday

The late afternoon sun made the trees appear rust color
and the evergreens black against the blue sky.

...make us sing and dance, make faces and give flower bouquets,
trying to be loved. You ever notice that trees do everything
to git attention we do, except walk?

Round Robin Photo Challenge

Our photo challenge for today is "Looking Up/Looking Down." Thank you Carly and Karen.

A cosy fire pit

These first two photos are looking down from the High Line.

The High Line is located on Manhattan's West Side. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to 34th Street, between 10th & 11th Avenues. Section 1 of the High Line, which opened to the public on June 9, 2009, runs from Gansevoort Street to 20th Street. Instead of tearing down the old rail line the city and rail enthusiasts decided to develop a park.

Looking up to the High Line from the street.

"The parks are the Nation's pleasure grounds and the Nation's restoring places.... The parks...are an American idea; it is one thing we have that has not been imported."

Weekend Reflections #25

James of Newtown Area Photo is the host of Weekend Reflections

I never noticed that I caught that evergreen tree right in the middle of the shot! I love that I caught the sky in the side view mirror and reflected in the side window and through the back window. If I do say so myself! Ha!

Postcard Friendship Friday

Marie of the French Factrice is the host of Postcard Friendship Friday.

This postcard (front and divided back) is an unused Vintage postcard from CardCow.com

The words Erin Go Bragh (air-inn-guh-braw) mean "Ireland Forever!"

It looks like the young girl is holding a shillelagh (shuh-ley-lee),

so-called because it was first harvested in the Shillelagh Forest, an ancient forest in County Wicklow (the word Shillelagh originally meaning "of the descendants of Ealach") was a cudget or weapon usually cut from hardwood such as oak, maple or blackthorn and used to swing, stab or clout an enemy. It is a cudgel or a club but it can double as a walking stick or a stick to herd livestock with.

Shillelagh law, as the expression comes down, means the one who uses violence most effectively rules.

Go over to Marie's to visit other participants.
