This water tower on Northern Blvd in Great Neck, NY is getting a sprucing up for Spring.
I wondered for a while why it was all covered up. Finally I realized that it probably is being scraped to remove rust and it's covered up to keep the rust from flying everywhere.
Interesting fact:
For pilots of small, private aircraft, water towers are a huge help because:
- They are large.
- They are elevated, making them easy to see from an airplane.
- All small towns have them.
- Small towns are nice enough to paint the town's name on nearly every tower!

i have a thing for water towers I think because I rely on them so much I rarely drink anything but

We don't get them here at all, so they fascinate me.

I don't think I've ever seen a water tower with a cover on it before. That's interesting that water towers are good landmarks for small planes. Makes sense when I think about it.
The water tower is interesting, indeed. And I also find the powerpoles and wires interesting! I thought they vanished some decades ago...

I hadn't thought about the fact that water towers were a distinctly North American thing, but I haven't seen any in the UK, either. We take them for granted, I guess.

It is an unusual sight. It reminds me of a fumigation tent.
Since I don't fly in small planes it never occured to me that water towers could be a navigation aid. It makes sense.

Great shot and an interesting post - I have never heard that water tower are important for pilots of small aircraft.
Water towers are amazing. We don't see them so much here. But what they can hold amazes me. They never seem as big as they are.
