My World Tuesday

We visited City Island this weekend and walked the main street City Island Avenue. The island is located just across the water from where I live in Whitestone, Queens.

Probably the tallest building on City Island, Bronx, N.Y.

City Island is a small island approximately 1.5 mi (2.4 km) long by .5 mi (1 km) wide. At one time attached to the town of Pelham, Westchester County, it is now part of the New York City borough of the Bronx. As of the 2000 census the island had a population of 4,520. Its land area is 1.023 km² (0.395 sq mi, or 252.835 acres).

City Island is located at the extreme western end of Long Island Sound, south of Pelham Bay and east of Eastchester Bay. City Island is an urbanized area, reminiscent of a small New England town.

The island has the look and feel of a small New England fishing village, with no spot more than a few minutes walking distance to the water. Most businesses are clustered along centrally-located City Island Avenue. There are two small supermarkets, a gas station, a pharmacy, and a bank, and a variety of other small shops. The island is most famous for its numerous seafood restaurants and antique stores which line both sides of the avenue.

The blue sky reflected in the windows joins the salmon color of the house and the green foliage.

Postcard Friendship Friday

Marie is the charming host of Postcard Friendship Friday.

This postcard was sent to me by two of my friends (Dorothy has since passed away). We never "did it again," unfortunately. I have since been to the Cloisters with other friends. If you ever get to New York make sure you visit.

The Cloisters house the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection of art and architecture from medieval Europe. Best known for the beautiful tapestries on display, the Cloisters also offer architectural installations, a series of special programs, and fantastic views of the Hudson.

"Located on four acres overlooking the Hudson River in northern Manhattan's Fort Tryon Park, the building incorporates elements from five medieval French cloisters--quadrangles enclosed by a roofed or vaulted passageway, or arcade--and from other monastic sites in southern France. Three of the cloisters reconstructed at the branch museum feature gardens planted according to horticultural information found in medieval treatises and poetry, garden documents and herbals, and medieval works of art, such as tapestries, stained-glass windows, and column capitals. Approximately five thousand works of art from medieval Europe, dating from about A.D. 800 with particular emphasis on the twelfth through fifteenth century, are exhibited in this unique and sympathetic context."

My World Tuesday

This swan is one of two spendingthe winter in a park near me in Queens, N.Y.

The word swan is derived from Old English swan, akin to the German Schwan and Dutch zwaan and Swedish svan, in turn derived from Indo-European root *swen (to sound, to sing), whence Latin derives sonus (sound). Young swans are known as cygnets, from the Latin word for swan, cygnus. An adult male is a cob, from Middle English cobbe (leader of a group); an adult female is a pen.

Swans feed in the water and on land. They are almost entirely herbivorous, although small numbers of aquatic animals may be eaten. In the water food is obtained by up-ending or dabbling, and their diet is composed of the roots, tubers, stems and leaves of aquatic and submerged plants.

Swans form monogamous pair bonds that last for many years, and in some cases these can last for life. Modern genetic techniques are starting to reveal that 'divorces' are more common than previously thought. These bonds are maintained year round, even in gregarious and migratory species like the Tundra Swan, which congregate in large flocks in the wintering grounds. The nest is on the ground near water and about a metre across. Unlike many other ducks and geese the male helps with the nest construction.

Monochrome Weekly Theme

I'm posting my Monochrome Weekly Theme post quite early this week. Usually I wait til Wednesday. And I'm posting on my "Mary Tomaselli's Photos" blog for a change.

This is a very yellow, bright zinnia but I do like it in black and white.

Weekend Reflections #9

James, here's my post for your fun meme Weekend Reflections.

Our local diner with the whimsical name "Lollipops." It was burned down a while back and here it is again completely refurbished. the first thing I noticed was the way the light fixtures reflect in the mirrors that are mounted around the place.

That's my husband, Vinny, in the foreground of the bottom picture. He's a very dear man!

My World Tuesday

These trees caught my eye along Francis Lewis Blvd and I just had to pull over and take a couple of photos. I think they may be ornamental pears. They are the reddest trees around town.

Weekend Reflections #8

I took this shot at the Planting Fields, Coe House. The lovely compote dish (a la Lenox) sits on a wood pedestal and is housed in a glass cabinet. The glass reflects light through and around and, I think, makes for a very interesting photo... if I say so myself. :)

James hosts Weekend Reflections. Thank you James! Go on over to Newtown Area Photo for additional participants.
