SOOC Sunday

Jan is the host of Straight Out of the Camera Sunday.

My photos were taken on a beautifully sunny day last week in Sands Point, Long Island.

This is Hempstead House, a mansion owned by the Gould family and then the Guggenheims. It stand empty now but you may look around the property and marvel at the mansion and the servants' quarters across the way.

The 2nd and 3rd photos show you the back of the house and the views out toward the Long Island Sound.

This area is called the Gold Coast. Nelson DeMille writes a wonderful novel by the same name.

All 3 shots were taken by my point-and-shoot Canon Power Shot SX110IS. I made no adjustments to the photos. I didn't even crop them!

Go visit Jan's blog Murrieta 365 for further participants in this meme.

Weekend Reflections # 19

This piece of art hangs in the bathroom of one of the for-show condos at the Meadowbrook Pointe development in Long Island. I stood to the side to reduce the reflection of the camera's flash in the glass.

Go visit James at Newtown Area Photo to visit other participants in Weekend Reflections.

The brightest light moving away from us, unless it be reflected, is darkness to us.

Round Robin Photo Challenge - Water

The Round Robin Photo Challenges are hosted by Karen, Carly and Steven and every two weeks they suggest a new topic so we can post representative photos.

The challenge this week is WATER

The photos above are of the NYC Waterfalls Project that was held from June through October 2008.

New York City hosted this exciting public art exhibit featuring spectacular man-made waterfalls 90 to 120 feet (27 to 37 meters).
They were softly lit at night and available for everyone to see. There were 4 waterfalls in total.

My photos show two of the falls: one on the Brooklyn side underneath the Brooklyn Bridge and the Pier 35 Waterfall.

We went down to Southstreet Seaport at the time where we could see all 4 of the falls at one time. They were breathtaking!

Water is the only drink for a wise man.

Postcard Friendship Friday

Marie of The French Factrice hosts Postcard Friendship Friday.

My friend Dorrit sent me this card from Aruba in December... what a way to spend the holidays, no? It's a beautiful card I think and I also love the stamps.

Go over to The French Factrice this afternoon or tomorrow to see other participants in Postcard Friendship Friday.

My World Tuesday

Hempstead House, Sands Point Preserve, N.Y.
built originally by Howard Gould,

became the home of Daniel and Florence Guggenheim in 1917.

Inside the foyer of Hempstead House, one glimpse of the imposing vaulted ceiling stirs the imagination of a grand lifestyle that once existed at this Gold Coast estate. Even though the house is no longer furnished, its architecture provides a hint of an elegant time long gone.

The Gold Coast

The north shore of Long Island, New York, in a sixteen mile stretch from Great Neck to Huntington, was a favorite retreat for the rich and the famous. Many were wealthy industrialists of the Gilded Age who pioneered great industries. These captains of industry spent fortunes on their lavish lifestyles. Many worked in and around New York City and created large estates as their dilatory domiciles on the north shore of Queens County, now Nassau County, today commonly referred to as the "Gold Coast."

My Favorite Photo This Week

"Harvey" of Harvey Park in Whitestone, NY

Because the park is named Harvey Park they erected a Rabbit and named him "Harvey" after the imaginary rabbit in the film Harvey with Jimmy Stewart.

This playground is named for George U. Harvey (1881-1946), who served as Queens Borough President from 1928 to 1941. The property was acquired in 1892 for public use as part of the water supply system for the village of Whitestone. In 1936, as part of the construction of the Whitestone Parkway, this ground was assigned as parkland. The area was diminished twice--a part was demapped in 1953, as part of the development of the Whitestone Expressway, and the western portion was taken in 1969 for College Point Industrial Park.

Weekend Reflections #18

James is the host of Weekend Reflections at Newtown Area Photo.

Irish emigrant pub in Sunnyside, Queens, NY

The "Black Lamb" reference means, in English Law, an illegitimate child.

Also there is an Irish ghost story by Lady Wilde called "The Black Lamb" A summary of the story can be read here

Postcard Friendship Friday

Marie of The French Factrice is the host of Postcard Friendship Friday

I wanted you to see this (cancelled) stamp that I received on a card yesterday. You can read the full story and see an uncancelled stamp here.

This 41-cent stamp was unveiled in 2007 and commemorates the 60th anniversary celebration of the Mendez vs. Westminster (1947) decision. This case represents the Mexican American Desegregation Case from Orange County, California in 1946. The case was decided seven years before Brown v. The Board of Education, and argued on Appeal by Thurgood Marshall of the NAACP, among many others. The Mendez case is a civil rights study about how one family stood up to a segregated society and with the support of their friends, relatives, community and hosts of lawyers and civil rights groups, convinced the Courts that segregation had no place in our schools or in our society.

Road signs INSIDE the hospital. Ha!

New York Hospital Queens is located on Main Street and Booth Memorial Avenue.

This Way Thurs-Way is a Thursday weekly meme of roads & its signs, signages, paths, passages, street scenes & the like.

Rules are pretty simple. Post photo/s on your blog that is relevant to the meme's theme. You can use the badge or simply make a link in your post to this site.

I recently visited this hospital for an angiogram. The Cardiac Cath Lab treated me so well. The people were expert and caring. The Cardiac surgeon was excellent. Everyone, Jose, George, the two Maureens, May A and May B, were on top of everything.

Late afternoon at the cemetery II

My World Tuesday

The service road of the Long island Expressway on Martin Luther King Jr Day. To the right is Saint Raphael's R.C. Church (Sunnyside, N.Y.) and, of course, in the far middle is the Empire State Building.

We were on our way to Calvary Cemetery which is to the left after that light up ahead.
